Organ Resources

Links and resources for new organists.

  • The New LDS Organist
A 12-lesson course from BYU designed to help pianists adapt their skills to the organ.  Includes a couple dozen simplified hymns.
  • The LDS Organist
A blog “to help pianists learn to become true organists.”  A couple dozen lessons cover topics such as the essentials, stops, registration, marking hymns, fingering, pedaling, etc.
  • Manual-Only Hymns for Organ
Simplified transcriptions of 38 well-known LDS hymns using fingering techniques for the organ, and no pedals.  Arrangements were prepared by organ departments at BYU, BYU-Idaho, and organists at Temple Square.  (Available at Deseret Book in a printed, spiral format.)
  • music.lds.org
The Music Player on lds.org is like a smart metronome and is a great way to simulate accompanying a congregation.  Turn the speed down until you play without error, then gradually increase.  You can also change the key, which may be necessary for some simplified hymns.  (The minimum recommended speed for a hymn may exceed what congregations are used to actually singing.  Some hymns are not available due to copywrite restrictions.)
  • Hymns Made Easy (Spanish)
60 hymns written in two or three parts, rather than the usual four.  Some have been transposed into keys with fewer sharps or flats to make them easier to read and easier to play.  (Available from the Distribution Center.)
  • Hymns, Simplified Accompaniments
Simplified arrangements of 158 hymns for piano or organ, published with spiral binding.
